The Fair a Success
The fair passed off in good shape all the way through and again reflects great credit upon the management.  Everything was done to make it a success by its promotors, [sic] and all that was lacking was the general interest by the people.  As is often the case, too many go empty handed, expecting the other fellow to furnish the exhibit. However, there was a creditable showing in all departments.  As usual races proved the most interesting of any feature of the fair. +

Coq B 79 Sept 6, 1901
[Head] Landis Again.
Medford, Dr., Aug 31. -- M.D. Landis, the wholesale murderer of Coos county, against whom positive evidence was secured a few weeks ago, and who has been pictured in all the San Francisco papers, and for the arrest of whom a big reward is offered, was in Jackson county only a short time ago.  He came over the Umpqua trail from Roseburg and stopped for three or four days with Mrs. Inlow, at the Trail creek postoffice, alleging that he was the van guard of a drove of cattle which was being driven from Roseburg to Klamath county.  The cattle came along all right, but Landis commenced hitting the high places in the direction of Prospect when the horns of the first steer were seen coming up the trail.  So quickly was his departure made that he forgot to liquidate his hotel bill with Mrs. Inlow.  From Trail he went to Prospect and from there on to Prineville.  From Prineville went east and is probably now in Idaho.  The above information was given us by M.F. Parker, who knew Landis, as did also the publisher of The Medford Mail, in Lane county, about nine years ago.  Mr. Parker, who was enroute to Boise, Idaho, was at Mrs. Inlow's a couple of days after Landis left there and followed his trail as far as Prineville, but was unable to catch up with him.  Landis is known to have killed three men.  He was a real estate dealer and timber locator, and his method was to pick up strangers with money who wanted to buy timber lands.  He would take them into the mountains where the strangers were m murdered.  Landis would explain upon returning, that the party had decided not to buy and had taken a shorter route to the railroad.  +

Circuit court adjourned Tuesday morning, at 10 o'clock, after a day and a half session.  There was not a case tried by jury.  This is the shortest term in the history of Coos county, and the manner in which Judge Hamilton is handling the circuit court means a saving of thousands of dollars to the county.  He is surely the right man in the right place, and should receive the hearty support of the people of this district.  +

[Coquille, the past and future, outlook.]
The fact that Coquille is enjoying a good healthy growth is visible in all parts of the town.  New buildings are going up on every hand and the sound of the hammer never ceases. This season has been the best in the history of the town, and it is not yet closed as several new buildings are proposed. [rapid pop. growth.]  The business of the town has increased at a tremendous rate, and it is fast becoming the trading center for the vast country which surrounds it. Being the most centrally located town in the county Coquille is destined to become a town of some importance, and that time is not far distant if we climb, in the future, as we have for a few years past.  The object of our citizens should be to secure more manufacturing industries in which to furnish employment to those who are seeking it.  A fruit canning establishment would ... prosper here, as it would be the means of furnishing a market for hundreds of dollars worth of fruit and berries every year, which now there is no market for and they are allowed to go to waste with great loss to the raisers. [more on fruit cannery.] ...The first creamery that was started was pronounced by some to be of no use, and that it would amount to nothing; but what would it mean to our county if the creameries were taken from it.  The better the market the farmer can find for his products the better market the business man will find for his goods. +

[Heads, though not w/punctuation]  Bond Election Illegal.  Morris & Whitehead, of Portland, Refuse to Accept the Bonds. Are We To Have Fire Protection?  A Flaw in the City Charter will Prevent us From Building the Water System.
charter provides that a special election shall be called for voting funds for a water system, but does not provide how election shall be held.  Also provides that separate ballots and ballot box be used for the question.  The question voted on at last election on the general ballot, therefore illegal by charter. Opinion of city council nothing can be done till after an amendment into our charter passed by state legislature which meets 16 mo hence. council brought to standstill not q
This town has surely got to have some kind of fire protection or else the lesson that was given several years ago will be repeated.
Why not buy a fire engine and establish cisterns in the different parts of the city, which could have water pumped into them from the river, that would hold a large quantity of water, and in case of a fire we would stand some show of saving the town From being wiped out of existence.  Of course the town has not had a serious fire since the "big fire", but there is no telling how soon one will break out and then it will be too late to cry out, "water system."
We do not see why the above plan is not practicable, and at the expense of a few thousand dollars it can be done ...  +
